What to say when a client asks for "just one more thing"
You are finishing the job and the client says: "oh, while you are here, could you give the oven a quick clean?" It feels small to her, but it is more work for you — and in the moment it is easy to say yes for free and leave feeling taken advantage of.
Why this happens
The client almost never knows exactly what is included in the service. To her, "just one more thing" feels like a small favor, not an extra request.
When you do the extra silently, you accidentally teach her that it is normal — and next time the request comes back bigger.
The CleanerFlow method
The CleanerFlow method is simple: acknowledge, clarify the scope, and offer a clear option. You do not give a flat "no" or an automatic "yes" — you handle it like a professional, firm and respectful.
Step by step
- 1Acknowledge the request warmly, without committing yet: "of course, I can look at that".
- 2Say, in one sentence, what today’s service covers, so the boundary is visible.
- 3Name the extra as a separate task — not as part of what was agreed.
- 4Offer a concrete choice: do it today for a price, or include it next visit.
- 5Confirm the decision and move on, without apologizing for charging.
What to say to the client
While you are here, could you also clean inside the oven?
Of course, I can do that. Cleaning inside the oven is a separate task from today’s cleaning. I can add it now for [price], or include it next visit. Which works best for you?
Common mistakes
- Saying yes automatically and absorbing the extra work with nothing agreed.
- Apologizing for charging, as if your work were an imposition.
- Arguing about the value of the work on the spot instead of offering a simple option.
- Doing the extra silently and leaving angry — that quietly wears down the relationship.
Quick checklist
- Know by heart what your standard service includes.
- Have a quick price for the most common extras (oven, fridge, windows).
- Keep a warm tone while making the boundary clear.
- Confirm the client’s choice before starting the extra.
Why a boundary helps the relationship
A clear boundary does not push the client away — it makes the relationship predictable. When she knows what is included and what is extra, she trusts you more and there are fewer surprises on both sides.
